Concrete Groovers/Jointers

A concrete groover (also called a jointer) cuts a straight, consistent control joint into fresh concrete. These joints give the slab a place to crack naturally as it cures, instead of letting random cracks show up across the surface.

Why It Matters

  • Controls cracking by giving the slab a planned place to crack (because all concrete cracks).

  • Keeps the slab looking clean with straight, intentional joints instead of random cracks.

  • Helps long‑term durability by reducing stress across the surface.

  • Makes the finish look professional, especially on sidewalks, patios, and driveways.

Tips and Tricks When Cutting Joints

  • Use string lines to mark out your joints so every line stays straight and consistent across the slab.

  • Use a 2×4 as a guide if you need a perfectly straight pull — especially on long sidewalks or driveway runs.

  • Wait for the bleed water to disappear before grooving; too early and the bit will tear the surface.

  • Pull in one smooth pass to keep the joint clean and avoid wobble marks.

  • Match your edging radius so the joint and edges look intentional and uniform.

  • Keep the bit clean — dried mud or grit will chatter in the concrete.

MARSHALLTOWN Chicago Walking Groovers, 10x10 Inch head, 3/8 Inch Radius, 1/2 Inch Groove, Made In The USA

This is my go‑to jointer. It’s what I learned on and what I’m most comfortable with. If you’re looking at the Kraft version, just know they weld the jointer plate on, and that weld can leave lines in your finish.

MARSHALLTOWN Heavy-Duty Zinc Concrete Groover, 6 x 4 3/8 inch Blade, DuraSoft Handle

Great for curved joints or for reopening joints that tightened up while finishing. Smooth, easy control when you need to follow a bend or clean out a line.
